The idea of fusioning Phillip Pullman's daemon concept with the great characters of the NCIS MCRT comes from a story from Xanthe: "Soul Deep".

I agree wholeheartedly with the choice of each animal, and their names, of course.

(16.10.2011) I did a little research on the web and fused some of the description of the personality traits attributed to NCIS’ daemons. The funniest part is that I haven’t truly invented anything. Their daemons Xanthe chose do truly fit them like a glove, so I thought I’d share.

“People with spider daemons are, like those with most insect daemons, more fragile that they seem. This is more true for spiders than others, as they generally have a bad reputation and some can even be considered dangerous. This kind of spiders often mean that a person has put up a shiled bewtween them and the world, intending for it to be dissuading from getting any closer. In reality, their daemon, the phsycal representation of their soul is small and could easily be crushed. For this it is often that spider daemons do not like to be known by others. They will hide, and be secretive, their soul always elusive and hidden by illusions. For this they will be mysterious, and that will make them powerful. For all that most peiople display their personality openly and without guard, spider daemons are not only incredibly difficul to read, they are also often hidden from view. Other people will not know them, but most often they will know others and their weaknesses well. People with spider daemons are the masters of their own fate, and that is what most defines them. Just as spiders weave their webs, so do they construct their own lives, though their choices. They are always very aware of the consequences of their actions, of how their choices will affect them and those around them, of how they will improve their life and if they in fact do want them. Growth and betterement are ingrained in their aspirations of life, and will always strive to construct themselves a future and a life they wish to live. Spiders are also master manipulators of the thinking and opinion of others, and can pass ofr something they are not. Fully functional, practical their surroundings and belongings always have a purpose. Ingenious and astute, people with spider daemons will see the far-reaching consequences of their actions and not always be willing to partake of paths were there is something too valuable at stake. This innate caution with which they approach everything can enslave them and in the end, no matter how much they plan and scheme, prevent them from having what they want. They can build again from scratch from the ruins of a previous life, in a second sometimes unexpected flourishing. They are very capable of personal growth and emotional evolution, but they for attachements very slowly. They are adept at seeing possibilities and even creating them themselves, and they are cunning and creative. They are also progressive and rational, crafty and many times protective. They are also often smug, and very aware that they are very capable of fooling most. They are also notoriously sloitary, and will feel loneliness. They will find difficulty findinf companionship, especially because of their less than straightforward personality. They will wish to know anything and everything about someone, and then sure about their knowledge they will sonider approaching them. Venomous spiders are even more introverted than it is common in other harmless kinds. Also, int heir personality a strong agressive strack will be interwoven, more energetic in pursuing their ends and thier happiness. More passionate also, and more likely to be disappointed in the long run. Female black widow damons will be larger and always the dominant one in a relationship, on the other hand, male lack widow daemons will be deferrent to their partner in a romantical relationship and always willing to support them.”

*Note: female daemons are most common amongst men, while male daemons are most often found amongst women. The fact that human and daemon are almost invariably of opposite genders has no accepted explanation. They can be the same gender too, and this is often assocaited with homosexuality, and even though it is the most usual and immediately identifiable cause for this kind of unusual arrangement human-daemon it is not the only one. There are known cases that do not adjust to that simplistic explanation. It is thought that the gender of a daemon reflects a person’s needs. For example, a male human who is mostly in male company, and is masculine, would most likely have a female daemon to give him a feminine input he needs and will have difficulty finding. Conversely, a female human who is mostly in male company, maybe considered a tomboy, could possibly develop a daemon of the same gender to reflect her more masculine nature. But none of this would have to do with sexuality. Even so there is no proof as to why daemons take a specific gender and the reasons for that are usually determined individually.
